Book Discussion: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Don't Panic!

Join the Central New York Humanist Association for a book discussion of Douglas Adams' hilarious novel, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy! With all the terrible things happening in the world right now, let's read a lighthearted tale of how the Earth gets destroyed to make way for a galactic freeway ... don't forget your towel!

Reading the book is not a requirement of attending the book discussion, though with all the absurdist humor packed into the book, you may at least want to watch the movie ;) If you're more of an audiobook fan, the audiobook is expertly read by fellow humanist, Stephen Fry!

Did you know Douglas Adams was a fellow humanist? You can read about that here.

Humanist Crafternoon - Crochet for Charity

Let’s do some good for goodness sake with crochet! We’ll be making scarves and hats to donate to We Rise Above the Streets!

Liz will be leading an introduction to crochet for anyone who wants to learn. Yarn and hooks will be provided.

If you already know how to crochet (or knit!) great! Liz has a giant box of yarn* just waiting to be turned into goods we can donate.

*For real, this yarn was sent to me by accident when Joann went out of business. I don’t have a use, or the extra storage, for all this yarn. Please help me put it to good use!

Humanist Crafternoon - Cyanotypes

Let’s take advantage of the summer sun and use its light to make art!
Cyanotype is a photographic printing process that produces a cyan-blue print. Engineers used the process well into the 20th century to produce copies of drawings, aka “blueprints”. We can use the same process - essentially exposing specially-treated paper to sunlight - to create art!

We’ll have some items available to create your artwork, but please feel free to bring any objects from home. Anything that is relatively flat should work. Think about what might create an interesting shadow with its shape. Some common ideas include leaves, feathers, keys, jewelry, lace, etc.

Because this event is highly weather-dependent, we’ll keep a rain date of Sunday August 17.

The event will be held at Liz’s house. Please RSVP to cnyhumanists@gmail.com to receive the address.

CANCELLED: Author Michael Miller at the Matilda Joslyn Gage Center

This event has been cancelled because the grant that was obtained by the host institution to support this program was cancelled due to an Executive Order.

Join the CNYHA as we attend an author talk with Michael Miller at the Matilda Joslyn Gage Center. Michael Miller will be discussing his historical fiction novel High Bridge. A description of the book is below. We’re planning on going out for dinner following his talk - exact dinner location TBD.

Upstate New York in the mid-19th century is a cauldron bubbling with the lure of fast fortunes, religious zealotry, and battles for civil liberties. This fervor centers on the Erie Canal, which successfully supports scores of villages brimming with opportunity. One such village, Fayetteville, shapes the lives of two future American leaders.

High Bridge tells the stories of a young newlywed, the only child of freethinking abolitionists, and a prankster lad who grows up in the large family of an austere reverend. Despite their different childhoods and worldviews, they form an unlikely friendship. Can they combine their skills to solve a mystery and vindicate a Black man accused of murder?

Humanist Crafternoon: Visible Mending

In celebration of Earth Month, we’re going to learn how to mend our clothes - with a little personal touch!

Visible mending is a term that refers to mends or repairs that are meant to be seen. It’s a fun way to add a little personal flair to your clothing, while ensuring that item of clothing lasts a little longer (thus reducing our clothing waste!).

During this Crafternoon event, we’ll learn how to use simple embroidery techniques to give our clothing a new life.

What to bring: any piece of clothing (or even an accessory, like a hat or glove) that needs a little care. The techniques we’ll learn can help mend a hole or tear, cover a stain, or simply give new life to an otherwise fine piece of clothing. Don’t have anything that fits those categories? No problem! We’ll have extra fabric on hand so you can still learn the techniques.

Thread, needles, scissors, etc will be supplied by CNYHA.

We'll be at the Solvay Public Library in the Community Room, which is downstairs, and can be entered by taking an elevator from the main floor or by entering the building from the back parking lot.
