Come along with us on October 18th to explore the exhibit Commentary in Clay at the Wilson Art Gallery at Le Moyne College. This exhibit will feature the work of Syracuse claymates and ceramicists Linda Malik, Mary Stanley, and Wes Weiss. The artists will be present, and after we see the exhibit, we’ll have a chance to discuss the exhibit and talk with the artists about their work. The gallery is to the right as you walk into the Library.
More about the exhibit:
Humans have long used ceramics to capture their vision of powerful forces, whether those forces be human, natural or cosmic. Clay in particular reveals frightening impulses and profound desires, as it literally concretizes beauty. In this exhibit, three local ceramic artists use this natural, malleable material to comment on contemporary “wicked” problems, those that are dense and hard to solve. Their work provokes reflection, dialogue, emotional engagement and intellectual analysis.
More about the artists and their work:
Mary Stanley’s series of work is organized around the theme “A Stranger Like You.” She explores the concept of the stranger as an enemy to be feared or as a guest in need. What are our obligations to strangers? Immigrants, refugees, people from different cultural traditions or whose identity seems dangerous.
Linda Malik’s focus, “Wounded Women” explores women’s lives and historical experiences. Each piece evokes contemporary and historical ways women’s dignity and humanity have been undermined by structural forces and societal norms. And yet, Linda affirms how women create complex identities within structures of misogyny.
Wes Weiss lets his work literally “do the talking.” He calls his series “Philosopots.” It calls on wisdom traditions across time and in different cultural and historic contexts.
